ScanJoCo.us is a third-party website that monitors and records clear-air radio traffic from the KC MARRS P25 network. ScanJoCo.us is not affiliated with any entity or users of KC MARRS. ScanJoCo.us was founded in 2017. However, the website did not get off the ground until late 2018. Before 2020, ScanJoCo had hit-and-miss audio recordings and website stability issues. With time, these issues were resolved. Unfortunately, in March 2022, a hardware fault occurred on an NVMe storage drive that stored critical details of the storage array... resulting in expansive corrupted data on the audio storage. As such, all audio data before March 2022 was lost.
Fast forward to the start of 2023, ScanJoCo.us is chugging along with numerous transmissions logged in the database. ScanJoCo currently monitors and records from the following systems on KC MARRS: On the Kansas side, Johnson and Wyandotte, and on the Missouri side, Jackson (KCMO site) and Cass. Granted, all systems outside of Johnson County, KS are regarded as 'best-effort' due to distance, resulting in decoding issues.
Anyhow! Here are some Q & A's from the past few years...
What is ScanJoCo.us exactly?
ScanJoCo is a DVR-like website that records and archives all clear-air radio transmissions on the KC MARRS P25 system.
Does ScanJoCo.us record encrypted traffic?
No. It does not and will not record talk groups with encrypted audio. Metadata from time to time may be recorded. That is due to P25 latency.
Is there a subscription fee for using ScanJoCo?
No, but donations are greatly welcome to offset running/hardware costs.
Will a subscription fee ever be imposed on ScanJoCo?
No. It's a hassle to deal with that stuff.
Why are guests no longer allowed to listen?
Bandwidth saturation. At one point, people were openly linking ScanJoCo on social media during a weather event. This website is not hosted on some fancy fiber connection. Linking of the site on social media causes a user sure, and causes ScanJoCo's bandwidth pipe to become completely saturated, effectively killing the websites reachability to the greater web.
When was guest access restricted?
Summer 2023.
Why are registrations restricted?
Much like above, people were openly linking ScanJoCo.us on various social media websites. This website is not hosted on some amazing cloud server hardware. It is limited on bandwidth. Secondly, the Broadcastify scanner was taken offline in late 2023, and people began flooding the site. Once again completely saturating the upload pipe that is available.
When were registrations restricted?
Early December 2023.
Why is the standard (logged-in) user playback time limited to 14 days?
Due to how poorly the database backend is designed and how poorly pythons SQL interpreter is written, along with some ancient code (remember, most of the site has been the same since 2018)... the limitation of 14 days, or two weeks playback time felt logical to keep server loads low, and to keep the website snappy.
Are inactive registered accounts expunged or disabled?
On ScanJoCo.us, accounts not active for a year or more are set to inactive. Inactive accounts cannot login or view the website.
Is account sharing permitted on ScanJoCo.us?
No. Accounts that are found to be account sharing without prior approval will be expunged. Agencies and media are exempt from the account sharing limitation.
Can I request to have my playback time increased from 14 days to something higher?
Sure - but that is done on a case-by-case basis. You can email staff@scanjoco.us
I'm affiliated with or work for X agency. Do I get expanded historical access to the websites audio?
Yes. If you are employed with any various government agency (PD, FD, EMS, PW, DOT, what-so-be-it) on the KS or MO side, I will manually bump your access up from the default of 14 days to six months of play-back time.
